The thought that I use when mixing (especially when EQing) is what can I do to make this element more present, or easier to hear? What I’m trying to get at here is you need to think about why you are making a change, and not just copy/paste settings onto everything. Ears are sensitive to these tones for survival reason from long ago, like we had to be very aware of predators in bushes near by, and these frequency correspond to those tones.Ħ/7: boost them up? Why though? In this case, people often boost a few DB on the high end to bring up the air of a vocal or help clarity of certain elements in the mix. But why would you want to reduce this area? Human ears are more sensitive to certain frequency ranges (around 1k and 5k-6.5k for example). That’s generally a good idea, but don’t remove too much that it fundamentally alters the sound too much. You might want to reduce the guitar tones here so the transient of your kick comes through for example.ĥ: use for de-essing. Meaning they can often remove clarity of your true lows (30-150hz). Around 200-400hz is considered the muddy tones. Here’s the reason WHY so many people use band 2 and 3 to do this. It will just interfere with your intentional low end instruments.Ģ/3: reduce them to get rid of the red heat map. So you might want to trim the low end off that because you don’t want the low end of a hi hat. But if you play a sample and look at an EQ, you’ll sometimes find rogue lower frequency content on the sample. The primary frequency range you want to be audible on a hi hat is the high end (probably 3k+ hz). Let’s take a step back and think about the WHY to a few of these steps:ġ: get rid of the lows? Let’s look at a hi hat for an example of WHY you might do this. I think you have the right idea for the most common use for each band, but it doesn’t seem like you’re really thinking through WHY you might want to do any of these adjustments. If I remixed a song I did in the past it would sound completely different because I would not make the same exact moves with my processing. The only way that you song will sound like another is to literally have the same exact sounds in it. When comparing you have to see the bigger picture and not focus too much on the smallest detail. Comparing your productions to others is good but it can leat to your own downfall. Sorry for the long paragraphs but there is a LOT of bullshit around Equalization, there really are no rules and sticking with stuff like "cut at this point, boost at this other point" will rarely work, it will make your mixes sound sterile at best and completely destroy them at worst. Or maybe you have a dull vocal take and you need some air, so you get a nice shelf boost on the highs. It's hard to explain, you have to get in there and practice, experiment with various sounds and genres and you'll eventually get the hang of it.ģ- Last reason is enhancing/shaping a sound: maybe you want your toms to be fuller, so you pull out you huge co- uhm, I meant Pultec and boost the lows and highs and it makes the toms sound super rich. This is mainly up to taste, and will affect your overall tonal balance of your mix, you either chose to be mid focused or scooped or maybe scoop some sound while enhance the mids on others. To fix this, you use an EQ to figure out which frequencies to boost in one sound while maybe cutting on the other. Since these two sounds are similar in their spectral content, the louder one will mask the other, meaning that you will literally be unable to hear the quieter sound, not as clearly at least. If you know of any more, send a mod mail!ġ- To fix problematic frequencies: maybe you have a weird resonances coming from a bad recording or the subs are booming from proximity effect.Ģ- To fix clashes with other sounds: you have a song with vocals and a bunch of guitars. r/JunkFolder - post unfinished tracks here for others to finish If you're here, chances are you've heard of other similar subreddits, but in case you haven't, check these out.
